US Travelers Warned of 10-Year Prison Sentences for Carrying Cannabis Into Thailand

US officials have issued a warning to international travelers after Thailand introduced a customs policy in June 2026 that increases penalties for carrying cannabis across its borders. Violators now face up to 10 years in prison and a \$15,000 fine, regardless of domestic legalization.

The U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Thailand confirmed the updated penalties, which target anyone caught importing or exporting cannabis without explicit official permission. While Thailand decriminalized domestic cannabis possession in 2022, unauthorized border transit remains strictly prohibited.

Cannabis attorney Jeffrey Hoffman warned travelers against assuming that relaxed laws at home apply globally. "While we are seeing cannabis laws relaxed in countries like Canada and in various states in the U.S., cannabis is still generally illegal across the overwhelming majority of the planet," Hoffman said. He cited the high-profile detention of WNBA star Brittney Griner in Russia as a reminder of strict international enforcement.

Travel expert Bobby Laurie noted that carrying cannabis for personal use or holding a medical prescription does not exempt travelers from local prosecution. "Some countries have extremely strict drug laws, and the penalties can be severe," Laurie said, comparing the situation to Singapore's strict restrictions on everyday items like chewing gum.

To prevent accidental violations, Laurie advised travelers to physically empty and inspect all backpacks, purses, and carry-ons before packing for a trip. Forgotten items at the bottom of a bag can still trigger arrest and prosecution at foreign customs checkpoints.

While the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) allows certain medical cannabis products on domestic U.S. flights under specific conditions, international travel falls under entirely different legal jurisdictions. TSA officers who discover cannabis during security screenings are required to refer suspected violations to local law enforcement.
