DoorDash, the popular delivery service, announced on Thursday that it will now offer hemp-derived THC and CBD products, such as gummies and beverages, in select states. This move comes as a response to the increasing demand for these products among consumers looking to unwind and recharge.
Partnering with Merchants to Deliver Cannabinoid Products
DoorDash has partnered with several merchants, including DashMart, Total Wine & More, and ABC Fine Wine & Spirits, to facilitate the delivery of these products to eligible customers. Jacob Morello, Director and general manager of alcohol and emerging categories at DoorDash, expressed excitement about the expansion, stating, "With the growing demand for hemp-derived THC and CBD products, we're excited to expand access to a wide selection of products consumers crave."
The company cited polling data that indicates a majority of adults aged 21-65 are considering incorporating cannabinoids into their routines, while a similar percentage has expressed interest in abstaining from alcohol during "Dry January." To cater to these preferences, DoorDash has created a user-friendly, shoppable page featuring hemp-derived products, non-alcoholic beverages, and more.
Adherence to Federal Hemp Regulations
DoorDash emphasized that it will only deliver cannabis products that comply with the federal definition of hemp, as legalized under the 2018 Farm Bill. This means that the products cannot contain more than 0.3 percent THC by dry weight. The company's decision to include hemp-derived products marks a significant shift from its previous policy, as DoorDash CEO Tony Xu had previously stated that the company was not considering the delivery of cannabis products due to regulatory complications.
Potential Policy Complications on the Horizon
While DoorDash's expansion into hemp-derived THC and CBD products is a notable development, there may be some policy complications in the near future as Congress prepares to work on the next iteration of the farm bill. Certain members of Congress are considering new restrictions on the hemp industry, which could affect the range of products available in the market.
Despite these potential challenges, DoorDash remains committed to providing its customers with a growing selection of hemp-derived products, non-alcoholic beverages, and snacks delivered right to their doorstep. As preferences evolve and the demand for cannabinoid products continues to grow, DoorDash aims to be at the forefront of this emerging market, helping customers safely enjoy these products as they unwind and recharge.
