Michigan cannabis regulators have issued a recall for more than 26,000 vaporizer cartridges sold under the brand names RIPZ and Motor City Cannacarts, which are suspected of being tainted with a banned ingredient known as MCT oil. The Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA) announced the voluntary recall by licensee Sky Cannabis on Tuesday, August 12th.
The affected products were sold at 210 retail stores across Michigan since November 1, 2024. The recall notice states that several flavors of these vape cartridges may contain medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil, a food additive sourced from coconut or palm kernel oil. MCT oil was found in some patients during the 2019 EVALI (e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury) crisis, though a different additive, vitamin E acetate, was identified as the main culprit in that outbreak which led to at least 68 deaths nationwide.
The specific Sky Cannabis products affected by the voluntary recall are:
- Motor City Cannacarts – Georgia Pie
- Motor City Cannacarts – Confetti Cake
- RIPZ – Peach Cobbler
- RIPZ – Wedding Cake
- RIPZ – Ice Cream Man
- RIPZ – Tropic Thunder
Retailers have been instructed to post signs advising consumers to return the vape cartridges or dispose of them, and Sky Cannabis is working with stores to retrieve and dispose of the recalled products.
Consumers who purchased these vape cartridges after November 1, 2024, are urged to check the Metrc tag number on the package label against the numbers listed on the CRA's website. Anyone who has experienced adverse reactions should report them to the CRA. This marks the second cannabis product recall in Michigan this year.
